Pick up the October 2008 edition of Cycle World Magazine featuring the R3Touring on the front cover.  The Cycle World staffers pulled out all the stops in testing the “Kings of the Road- an 8 Bike Battle of the Baggers” where the Triumph received high praise for its superb handling and engineering excellence.  The feature article compared the Triumph to the following competitor models:

  1. HD Road King Classic
  2. Honda VTX 1800T
  3. Kawasaki VN2000 Classic LT
  4. Moto Guzzi California Vintage
  5. Suzuki C109RT
  6. Victory Kingpin Tour
  7. Yamaha Road Star Silverado S

Across fourteen pages of editorial, the Cycle World staff detail their test and findings.  Three of the eight editors picked the R3Touring as the best of the bunch.  The other five riders all picked the Triumph as one of the top three models in the test. Positive comments included superb ride quality, the inherently fun 2300cc motor and “what is probably the best windshield in our group (of test bikes).”  Some take away quotes from the article include:

“What the Triumph offers is a sophisticated completeness.  Like the folks from Milwaukee, the Triumph people in Hinckley took your desire for travel seriously and developed a bike to do the job.”

“A winner? The Triumph Rocket III won going away….”

Did you know the only components the R3Touring shares with the original Rocket, outside of the motor, is the taillight and the rearview mirrors?

That’s right; the all new motorcycle was specifically designed as a ground up new motorcycle intent on being the best ‘bagger’ touring cruiser it could be. And that means an all new purpose-built frame, swingarm, suspension and running gear that deliver a comfortable and commanding ride quality over miles and miles of asphalt.  The new rear wheel and its 180mm cross section tire completely changes the ride characteristics of the next generation 2300cc cruiser making it easy to handle at low speed maneuvering and nimble through corners when you need it.  Look closer and you’ll see a quick disconnect windscreen that pops on and off easily without tools, all new floorboards with a heel and toe shifter fit for a king, spacious hard bags that disconnect after a long day’s riding, and an all new seat featuring an 18 inch seatpan for providing comfort where it counts over the long haul.  So forget what you think you know and see the all new Rocket III Touring for the first time; as a class leading touring cruiser that delivers enjoyment by the truckload.
