What is the Space Operations Institute (SOI)?

It’s a partnership with education, industry, and NASA created to encourage students in the engineering and computer fields to develop a relationship with NASA.

What does SOI do at Capitol?

SOI students are involved in co-op and internship opportunities that have them working hands on with satellite operations at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Starting January 2005, the Willam G. McGowan Academic Center will house an operations center where students will be able to monitor and control satellites from campus.

Why should I take advantage of the SOI?

NASA is facing a reduction in its workforce with 15 percent of the employees becoming eligible for retirement. Within five years, 25 percent will be eligible. This means that there is a great opportunity for employment at NASA for all Capitol College graduates, particularly those studying astronautical engineering, electrical engineering, and software engineering. The aerospace industry has been identified as a high-growth job area and provides students with the opportunity to work in a very interesting and exciting field. Students who want to participate in the SOI may receive paid co-ops, paid internships, and tuition benefits.

  • Dave Wagner is the director of the Space Operations Institute at Capitol College.
  • He received his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University in flight technology and aviation and his master’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in aeronautical science.
  • He worked 13 years as a pilot and eight years as a controller before joining NASA, where one of his jobs was training astronauts in the space shuttle simulator.
  • Wagner says that SOI is unique because it's the perfect meld of a classroom education with experience in the field.
